Crowds enjoy Royal May Day Festival

THOUSANDS of people gathered for Knutsford's Royal May Day Festival today (Saturday).

The procession set off at 2pm and concerns about a rain-soaked weekend soon disappeared as the sun shone.

Organisers had asked spectators not to throw coins into the procession for the children.

They wanted people to donate money by putting it in buckets carried by volunteers.

Almost everyone obeyed the new rules, which meant the procession moved through the streets more easily.

A Cranford-themed lorry appeared in the procession for the first time.

It was added to the procession following the success of the BBC adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel.

More than 500 youngsters took part in the event.

Can someone please tell us what benefit the Mayday weekend brings to Knutsford? Shops closed, restaurants and bars empty? Such bizarre opening hours that people queue for half an hour to get served in the Builders? Roll on May 6th when that Fair disappears; the only people who seem to benefit from it is the council? Why should locals suffer the inconvenience of a ghost town for 3 days?

My wife and I always enjoy our days out in Knutsford but could not believe why we could not get our usual lunch on Saturday afternoon? Next time we will go to Wilsmlow, they might be open!

Oh dear Emma and James on your comment!! Knutsford is very proud of its Royal May Day and alot of time and effort, plus funding goes into it each year. I was in it as a child and I love the weekend and the life it brings to the town. The true people of Knutsford are loyal to this and are willing to cope with the closure of afew pubs and shops for the afternoon, if not hours!!! Open your eyes my dear.....
