Children plan healthy garden

FROM now on eveything in the garden could be lovely for children at Goostrey Community Primary School.

Under the guidance of reception teacher Lyndsey Saxton the children are now busy developing a small vegetable garden as part of an eco-friendly project to encourage younsters in the value of healthy eating.

Supporting the idea is the Rotary Club of Holmes Chapel who have helped the school with a £300 send off' on their gardening journey. Said Rotary Club President Ken Beresford: "What a wonderful idea to encourage children in the knowledge of healthy eating.

"The development of a vegetable garden with children planting various vegetable seeds and then watching their progress is a great idea and the school is to be congratulated on their foresight." When completed the garden will have an ornamental surrounding wall which will enhance the plot.

Early slides of children at work preparing their vegetable garden were shown to the Rotary Club at a recent meeting at Ye Olde Vicarage Hotel and that was followed by an interesting slide presentation covering a recent visit to the Elizabeth Fontein Primary School in South Africa.

The school, which is situated near Capetown, is twinned with Goostrey school and Rotarians were treated to a most comprehensive slide presentation by Goostrey School's four ambassadors' to South Africa - Lyndsey Saxton, Andrew Davies, Catherine King and Janet Raven.

Throughout the evening Rotarians and guests saw the South African children at work and play and were impressed by the children's constant smiles, obviously reflecting their love for the school.
